There’s no denying that Easter is very much focused on chocolate, Easter eggs and all things sweet, for those who celebrate it. Of course, we’re all about enjoying a treat, especially if you have a sweet tooth like us. But what about the refined sugar and caffeine content in all that chocolate?

Did you know that a standard bar of 50g milk chocolate contains up to 6 teaspoons of refined sugar? And that a similar-sized bar of dark or raw chocolate contains the caffeine equivalent of a shot of espresso? As well as caffeine, chocolate also contains theobromine, a disruptive stimulant similar to caffeine. Combined, they all cause energy spikes and crashes that wreak havoc with mood and concentration levels, can affect sleep and suck us into a vicious cycle of cravings. This isn’t good news for us, or our children.

Supertreats to the rescue

So, you might want to consider a healthier option this Easter. Our Supertreats bars taste just as delicious as milk chocolate but contain no refined sugar and are caffeine and theobromine free. Plus they’re 100% natural, organic and full of wholesome goodness. We use carob instead of cocoa, and low-GI coconut blossom nectar to sweeten and give the bars a heavenly caramel taste. We also use organic whole milk and cocoa butter to give them their rich and creamy texture.

Carob – A nutritional powerhouse

Once harvested, the fruit of the evergreen carob tree are dried and gently roasted, before being ground into a fine powder that looks and tastes similar to chocolate. Naturally sweet – unlike cocoa which is very bitter – carob contains no stimulants and is packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. It’s particularly rich in calcium – weight-for-weight, containing more than three times as much as milk.

And, if that’s not enough, this superfood hero is a fantastic source of some unique fibres. Firstly, it contains Pinitol fibre that in research studies has been shown to help keep blood sugar stable. Secondly, the insoluble dietary fibre in carob has been shown to have the same health benefits typical of soluble fibres such as beta-glucan, commonly found in oats. Soluble fibres are widely acknowledged to have cholesterol-lowering qualities.
