Winter is over and we can finally expect better weather and longer days, helping us to feel more uplifted at this time of year. But if you’re still struggling to shake off the sluggish winter feeling, here’s our top tips to help boost your energy throughout the Spring days!

GET ENOUGH SLEEP

A good night’s sleep helps our body and mind to function properly and is essential for our mood and energy. Feeling stressed, having too much caffeine and relying on stimulants to give us energy can cause havoc with our sleep patterns. So try and relax in the evening and switch to caffeine-free herbal teas and carob instead of chocolate. So if you want a sweet fix, that’s where our caffeine-free carob bars come in!

EAT BREAKFAST

It’s said to be the most important meal of the day, and we agree! Studies have shown that those who eat in the morning are in a better mood and have more energy to keep them going throughout the day. Be sure to go for healthy options that are high in protein, low in sugar and packed with complex carbohydrates and fibre: Porridge with fruit and nuts; eggs with wholegrain toast and spinach; or a protein-rich smoothie are all good choices.

CUT DOWN ON SUGAR

Processed foods high in refined sugar release energy quickly and cause fluctuations in blood sugar levels, leaving you feeling tired and sluggish afterwards. Instead, look for wholefood meal and snack options and choose unrefined sugars like coconut blossom nectar. This is what we use to sweeten our carob bars in place of refined sugar – it has a very low glycemic index (GI) meaning it releases energy slowly without those spikes and crashes, plus it’s rich in valuable nutrients like potassium, magnesium, calcium and iron – unlike refined sugar, which is totally devoid of any goodness.

EXERCISE OUTSIDE

Blow away the cobwebs and get outdoors! Running, brisk walking, cycling, or playing in the park with your children are all great for raising your heart rate, sweating out the toxins and releasing endorphins, the body’s natural mood-booster. Try and get outdoors in the morning, on your lunch break or after work and even more so on a weekend. If the sun is shining, that extra dose of vitamin D is great for bone health and immunity too!

TAKE A BREAK

If you’re burning the candle at both ends and have a lot going on with work, social life and/or the family routine, it can make you feel exhausted. Use the change in season as a ’springboard’ to taking time out to refresh – go for a walk, switch off from social media, chill out with a book, meditate or have a bath.

HAVE A DE-CLUTTER

There’s nothing like a good clear-out at home to purify your head! Go through your wardrobes, cupboards and shelves and get rid of old things – take unwanted items to the charity shop, sell things on eBay or take a trip to the tip. Try upcycling furniture, clothes or objects like food jars that have been cleaned – it’s amazing what you can do with a bit of creativity and DIY skills! This will help you to feel refreshed, revived and free.
